What I learned at the hospital

A print out of my heart rate that I got from the hospital.
I learned how to read it and concur if my heart rate was normal or not.

Educational Essay

My personal strengths, skills, and talents would include art, fast thinking, self confidence, honesty, knowledge of modeling, hunting, fishing, and many other things that make me, me. My personal goals is to be happy with my future job and to have a family of my own, to be happy and content with my life. My long term goal is to be a surgeon, I am not sure what kind of surgeon I wish to be yet, but I plan to figure it out in college. To reach these goals, I plan to make great grades throughout college, to increase my chances of getting into my first choice medical school. The help I will need to reach these goals would be mainly TOPS and my father’s GI Bill. College and medical school is very expensive, but I plan on doing it, whatever it takes. I may also need tutors for different subjects such as math. I want to be the best and I want to achieve greatness for myself, and to prove to myself and others that I am capable of amazing things.
The career and interest goals I have are medical science. I want to be a surgeon more than anything, and I will do whatever it takes to accomplish this dream. My options are vast, there are many ways of achieving my goals, such as the military. I have often thought of joining the Navy after college for their medical school assistance.  The career path that will let me strengthen my talents would be to become a surgeon. I think this because I will need courage and persistence to get there, I will have to be fast thinking and productive, this career field will only strengthen the skills I already have. I must be willing to let it strengthen me rather than let it bring me down.
After high school, I plan to spend the summer working at home and getting ready to attend ULL in the fall. I plan to finish with a 4 year degree in biology. After this I plan to go off to medical school, I have not decided which school would be best for me yet, but LSU in New Orleans is sounding more like home to every time I look at the website.
What I will do to prepare for this is, to make the best grades that I can, by studying every
day, by working hard and achieving more than I ever thought I could. Over the summer I plan to study biology on my own, learn as much as I can before classes start in August.  To me, this is the best way to prepare myself, with self discipline and determination.

Reflection Essay

I wanted to do this project because I am interested in health care. And also the reason I wanted to do this project was because I wanted to see if healthcare was the field I truly wanted to be in. Plus there is a big difference between acute care and long term care. I wanted to see which environment I prefered. I also wanted to accomplish gaining my knowledge on medical care and anything else that I could learn that would be able to aid me in the future. I wanted to accomplish my requirement for graduating while also learning a thing or two about college and medical school.
What I did to start my project was call Ms. Jessica, the director of the Ahec program, and ask her if I could shadow her and maybe watch a surgery. She said yes and I went to Avoyelles Hospital as soon as I could. When I met with her, we went over patient confidentiality and times that I could go. Then next time I saw her we went to a few different parts of the hospital and we recapped what I knew from the Ahec program. After completing 13 hours with her, I went to Valley View Health Care Facility and shadowed the wound care nurse, Mrs. Veronica. And it was very interesting for me. I think my favorite part was going to the  nursing home, mostly because I got to see the things that were more interesting for me like the cancer wounds and things like that, it was more exciting than going around the hospital following a nurse. I know that I definitely do not want to be a nurse. I want to be the one getting my hands dirty and actually saving people’s lives, not going around every 3 hours and give them medicine. The best part of my project was watching a C-section. Even though Ms. Donna set it up for the seniors I still took the experience as part of my senior project.
I feel that I accomplished a lot, in the hospital, I did have the opportunity to help others which was nice, it’s always good to help other people. I think I have accomplished my goal of gaining more knowledge of the healthcare industry. I feel that I have really attained a better understanding of the way a hospital and nursing home runs.
This whole experience of finding something that I would truly want to do, to actually doing it was a big learning stretch for me. I was used to my parents calling people of authority for me, but this time I did everything myself. From just setting up everything to shadowing for 20 hours, the entire process was a learning experience. The thing that I learned the most is that no matter what job you have in a hospital or nursing home, every job is important, from the doctors to the house keeping. Everyone plays a vital part to the upkeeping of any institution.

Letter of Intent

Letter of Intent
Avoyelles Public Charter School
201 Longfellow Rd.
Mansura, LA 71350

Dear Senior Project Committee:

The general area of interest I have is science and medical science. I choose this area of topics because I have always been interested in the human body and the way it works. After taking biology and biology II, I have learned many things in this area of studies. I have also had the privilege to be part of the Ahec program, where I spent a month shadowing doctors in a hospital and watch surgeries and procedures. My family works with long term care, so I already have a lot of insight on that part of health care.

I plan to shadow doctors and nurses and hopefully watch a surgery or two. It will not cost anything and will only take time out of my weekend or weekday. It will take place at Avoyelles Hospital and the dates I have gone so far are April 1st and April 7th, I will post the dates I go when I have permission. It is a stretch to my abilities because it will will expose me to acute care, which I am not used to.

My mentor for this project is Ms. Jessica Ravare, she is a RN at Avoyelles Hospital, she is also head of the AHec program, which is how I know her. She has taught me a lot from the Ahec program and in the little time that I have spent with her while I was shadowing. She will be the one whom I interview for information.

This project is a learning stretch for me because I already have knowledge with long term health care, but no knowledge of acute health care. My father is the administrator of Valley View Health Care Facility, which is a nursing home in Marksville. I have worked there since I was 15 doing paper work and sometimes helping CNA’s. I am trained to deal with patients who have dementiona and other disorders. A hospital setting will be new to me, the different departments of a hospital always have something going on and it is much more active than a nursing home. My understanding of plagiarism is when you take information from somewhere and not give the proper credit. I understand that if I plagiarize I will not receive credit and I will not graduate on time.

Sincerely,

Kennedy N. Caubarreaux
